On the occlusal (biting) surfaces of molars, there are many tiny pits and fissures that are even smaller than toothbrush bristles, making them difficult to clean thoroughly. Even with the use of dental floss or very fine bristles, it is challenging to completely clean these areas, leading to the accumulation of food remnants and bacteria, which can result in cavities.
Fissure sealant is used to protect these small cracks and crevices on the tooth’s surface. After application, the sealant forms a protective barrier, blocking food debris and bacteria from entering, making the teeth easier to clean and less prone to cavities. This procedure is generally suitable for children who have recently erupted their permanent molars at the age of 6 or older.
